West Hollywood is a city in Los Angeles County, California, incorporated in 1984 and known for the famous Sunset Strip. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, its population was 35,757. The area's history dates back to the late 18th century when Portuguese explorer João Rodrigues Cabrilho claimed the land for Spain. The indigenous Tongva people suffered from European diseases, and the Spanish mission system later called them "Gabrielinos" after Mission San Gabriel. By 1780, what is now the Sunset Strip became a major road linking El Pueblo de Los Angeles to the Pacific. The town of "Sherman", later renamed West Hollywood, developed as a hub for the Pacific Electric Railway. The area flourished with casinos, nightclubs, and a thriving film industry. After the Soviet Union's fall, thousands of Russian Jews immigrated. In 1984, a coalition of LGBTQ+ activists, Russian immigrants, and seniors incorporated West Hollywood and passed some of the nation's strongest rent control laws.
